Conjunctions News & Announcements

Dear friends of Conjunctions,

I’m happy to announce that our spring issue, Conjunctions 84: We Love All We Voices, has just come off press. It features new work by Arthur Sze, Aimee Bender, Sandra Cisneros, Rick Moody, Laura Kolbe, and many other exceptional writers, along with a previously unpublished essay by William H. Gass and a portfolio of vernacular Caribbean writing guest-edited by Robert Antoni, with writings by Marlon James, Marcia Douglas, Ishion Hutchinson, Tiphanie Yanique, and others.

While we have begun work on Conjunctions:85, Anew, with contributions by Jonathan Lethem, Julia Alvarez, and Karen Russell, we’ve decided this was a perfect moment to take a summer break—from June 15 through September 15. We’ll not be considering any submissions during that period as we are in the process of permanently moving from our Bard campus office after 35 years. When we return, we will resume publishing new content on Conjunctions online, and a submission call for Anew will go out through Submittable and our newsletter. Simply put, we aren’t going anywhere, just taking a beat.

Leaning into the unknown has always been built into our identity. We see this breather as an opportunity to take a reflective look at the road we’ve traveled since our first issue was independently published by our founding editor in 1981 (after which we partnered successively with a private investor, an indie press, and a major New York publishing house before moving to Bard), and chart our course forward. Conjunctions:85, Anew, will mark the beginning of a brave new unfolding of the journal, with many exciting developments that we will share with you soon, including our new distribution arrangement with Asterism where you can order recent issues beginning next week.

Meanwhile, we have a submissions-related change to announce. Going forward, Conjunctions will no longer be accepting hard copy postal submissions. By transitioning to an extended, online-only submissions window in the fall, we hope to become more available to writers from across the world without sacrificing editorial care.

Your support matters to us now more than ever. I hope you’ll make a fully tax-deductible donation as we move forward into the next chapter of our journey (you can donate here on the CLMP website by writing “Conjunctions” in the notes line). Your donations are of critical importance and are deeply appreciated!

Wishing you a lovely, productive summer. And thank you, as always, for reading dangerously,

Bradford Morrow
Editor, Conjunctions
